Bike Touring in the Fast Lane

We are so lucky in SSM to have such great cycling tours right from home.  This year’s bike trip was to Madison Wisconsin for TREK World a 1,600 km  trip around Lake Michigan.

I did not have the usual mileage on my legs and I was looking forward to 2 weeks of intense riding with Jan.  The Michigan and Wisconsin Department of Transportation have great cycling maps on their websites showing the best cycling roads with traffic levels etc.

We averaged 250 km per day and by the time we got back, we were beginning to get our form.  I also discovered that when bike touring, less is more as the more stuff you have, the heavier and more difficult  the riding becomes.  We had plans to camp out in our hammocks but as it turned out we got soft and started motelling it.

We typically started riding at 8 am and rode usually till 8 pm with two fuelling stops in between.  We are hoping to do a few overnighters in Michigan this fall, riding either to Paradise, Drummond Island or St. Ignace for some fast paced, light weight motel touring.  If you are interested let us know and we can fill you in on the dates.
